The list below describes the primary methods for getting career experience. Depending on your goals and circumstances, some options might be a better fit for you than others.

  • Internship
  • General Scope
    An internship (also known as experiential education) is an experience that is either directly related to your major field of study or your career interest. Internships are an opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge alongside a professional.
    Paid/Unpaid
    An internship can be paid or unpaid experience.
    Why Do this?
    Gain experience to be competitive in your career and job search.
    Apply knowledge gained from coursework.
    Explore if a potential career option is a good fit.
    Meet and work with professionals and establish a network.
  • Part-time Job
  • General Scope
    Part-time jobs can offer work experience and skills sets transferable to future career positions.
    Paid/Unpaid
    Part-time jobs are paid at minimum wage or higher. Another less common option is a stipend.

  • Undergraduate Research (Humanities or Science)
  • General Scope
    Undergraduate, research experience, regardless of your major, will enhance your resume and assist you in future job searches.
    Paid/Unpaid
    Research opportunities vary if they are paid/unpaid. See an ICC advisor if you are pursing an off-campus unpaid position.
    Why Do This?
    Undergraduate research is another option to gain experience, is useful to all majors (including non-science majors) and has significant career-building benefits.
  • Volunteer
  • General Scope
    Service performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its institutions. It can be as little as one hour or as long as several hours each week.
    Paid/Unpaid
    Positions are unpaid and exist on and off campus
    Why Do This?
    Students who volunteer learn how to work in teams and develop leadership a skills. This is valuable for higher education, careers, and community involvement. Boost your resume.
  • International Opportunities
  • General Scope
    An outbound international internship is work experience that is either directly related to your major field of study or your career interest. Completed in an international setting (see internship for specific guidelines).
    Paid/Unpaid
    An internship abroad can be paid or unpaid experience. It can be eligible for transcript notation or units. Funding might be available to assist with costs of travel abroad.
    Why Do This?
    Increase marketability to employers in a growing global economy.
    Gain real-world understanding of diversity and cultural competency.
    Prove flexibility and initiative.
    Improve your language skills or learn a new language.
    Develop a global perspective that will benefit a future career.
  • Co-op
  • General Scope
    A co-op is a six month or longer, full-time experience in industry. This will require adjustments in your course schedule. Check with your academic advisor or an ICC advisor.
    Paid/Unpaid
    Co-ops are paid usually full-time positions that often require a reduction in course load.
    Why Do This?
    Co-op opportunities provide excellent skill building opportunities to prepare you for your career after graduation.
  • Career Positions
  • General Scope
    A career position is commonly obtained after completing your degree in your field of interest.
    Paid/Unpaid
    Career positions are typically paid and full time.

    A combination of your education and experiences have helped you get here.
