Community Service Award

Kelly Sheffield

2019 Outstanding and Civic Engagement Award Winner

Kelly Sheffield is a third year undergraduate student who has dedicated her life to community service. Her drive to help others started in high school when she founded the nonprofit Homeward Band. She designs and sews headbands for product sales at stores that include: Fleet Feet Sports and TRUE Boutique in downtown Sacramento. The proceedings of which go to WEAVE, to assist their efforts with victims of sexual/domestic violence. After enrolling at UCD, she became involved in the Davis community by volunteering at community meals, Grace Gardens, and eventually started her own homeless care packages to give out to homeless people throughout Davis. She later became the community service chair for her sorority, Kappa, to establish community service hours as curriculum for the chapter. In the first quarter, the chapter completed 150+ hours. Kelly is also involved with California Youth Connection (CYC) which helps foster care youth. With other CYC councils across California, she has lobbied for policies that were ultimately signed into law in 2018. Kelly is actively involved on the UC Davis campus and hopes to create more awareness on homeless and foster youth populations. Her goal before she graduates in 2020 is to complete more community service hours with different organizations and to sell more headbands for her non-profit, Homeward Band. Kelly hopes to continue her education to law school after undergrad and to one day be actively involved in politics. Her dream is to create more policy and initiatives to help at risk youth and to work towards a system of fair and equal education for all.
